(01 Apr 2011)

The 'National Best Practice Guidelines for Informing Families of their Child's Disability' are included in the Regional Child Development Training programme for HSE staff working in the North East. The course is designed to enable health care staff to identify when and to whom it is appropriate to refer a child . Multi-disciplinary health professional's including Doctors, Nurses, Social workers, Psychologists and Therapists from all disciplines attend this training. This year there are 40 participants and the training will take place over three days from the 6th April.

"We believe these  Guidelines not only apply to informing families of a child's disability but can be generalised to sharing any sensitive information with families. The 'Words you never forget' DVD has a very powerful effect on participants each year" Louise McDermott, Assessment Officer,  HSE Dublin North East,
