What are "Early Intervention Services?"

Early Intervention Services are a group of people who will work with you and your child to give you support and help your child reach their full potential.

When your child is diagnosed with a disability, someone may put you in touch with the Early Intervention Services Team. Your General Practitioner (GP), a public health nurse, or a maternity or paediatric unit in the hospital might refer you. Also, you can make direct contact with your local Early Intervention Team yourself.

Each Early Intervention Team is made up of different professionals who will work together with the family. Not all professionals will be represented on each team. Some of the professionals who work on Early Intervention Teams include:

  • Psychologists
  • Speech and Language Therapists
  • Physiotherapists
  • Occupational Therapists (OTs)
  • Paediatricians
  • Social Workers
  • Educationalists

You can find out about these, and other professionals by clicking the link to Professionals you may meet.

Please remember that while the specialists and therapists are experts in their fields, they are not the most important part of early intervention. The most important part is you - the parents. You know your own child best.
